  • Printed Cotton Gown | Francis Open | 1770 - 1790

    • A common and practical garment for women in colonial and early America, this gown is inspired by period styles frequently depicted in 18th-century artwork and written descriptions. Designed for both elegance and functionality, it features carefully laid pleats and a pinning front closure, allowing for an adjustable fit. The 3/4-length sleeves extend just below the elbow, offering coverage while keeping the wrists free for ease of movement.

This gown is made from Francis Open Reproduction Fabric from Colonial Williamsburg, a lightweight 100% cotton textile inspired by an 18th-century British bed quilt in The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s collection. The delicate open floral pattern reflects the refined beauty of period textiles, making this gown a historically accurate choice.

The construction includes a fitted upper portion that is worn like a jacket and pinned in front, paired with a full-length skirt in the back and a standard petticoat. When worn with a split bum skirt support, the silhouette is elevated, creating a more formal impression. For a more practical, everyday look, it can also be worn without the support for ease of movement.

To ensure the best fit, measurements must be taken while wearing stays, as this gown is designed to be worn with proper 18th-century undergarments.
